Two Year-End Kidney Health Priorities

As we approach the end of the 118th Congress, there are two bills that seem the most likely to pass with your help: The Treat and Reduce Obesity Act, and the Honor Our Living Donors Act.

The Treat and Reduce Obesity Act: This bill would expand access to important anti-obesity drugs that have also shown to slow the progression of CKD. The bill would allow patients who get prescriptions for the drugs while on private insurance to continue to have the drugs paid for once they transition to Medicare. Currently, Medicare is banned from covering anti-obesity medications, and this bill would be an important step forward in making sure patients can access these drugs.

The Honor Our Living Donors Act: This bill expands access to the National Living Donor Assistance Center, which helps living donors cover any non-medical (travel, lodging, childcare, etc) expenses that they incur in the course of their donation. Currently, eligibility for NLDAC is restricted, and considers not only the donors financial situation but also the recipients financial situation when determining the donor’s eligibility. The HOLD Act would stop this, and only consider the donor’s situation when determining their eligibility for assistance.
